Let's tie ALL civil servants pay to performance

Let's tie ALL civil servants' pay to performance

With regard to the Florida legislation for teaching and all similar attempts at reform:

When our soldiers and sailors are paid more or less depending on whether we are winning or losing our wars;
when employees of the Department of State get a smaller or larger paycheck depending on the state of our foreign relations;
when law enforcement officers are compensated according to whether crime rates are rising or falling,
and firefighters are paid according to whether a greater or lesser number of homes has caught fire in a given period;
when university professors have their salaries slashed or augmented depending on their students' performance;
and when members of Congress are paid more or less depending on the state of our union at home and abroad-

--then, perhaps, I will listen with more sympathy to those who wish to tie the compensation of K-12 educators to the academic performance of those whom they serve.

  1. Using elegant metaphors you have just summed up an incredible point about the value of our (teachers') work!!! I hate having to defend my career when I work extremely hard to keep my classroom engaging and beneficial to all who enter!!!

    Thanks!

  2. Great post. Police not wanting to patrol in high crime areas, Doctors not wanting to work in clinics...sounds like a great concept!
